The low-level software that is not usually changed on a device. Firmware is now often stored in EEPROM or Flash memory, so it can be erased and updated. Historically, firmware was stored in read-only chips. Since it could not be changed without a hardware change, it was called firmware. Some examples of firmware that are more closely related to this wiki include NonUI, Internal UI, CarrierOS, or even regular iOS. In simpler terms, firmware usually refers to the operating system that runs on a device.
